Focused Practice Designation in Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery (MIGS)
On October 3, 2022, Dr. Rebeles took and passed the 2022 MIGS Focused Practice examination. She is now formally recognized by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology as a qualified specialist in Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery, owed to additional training gained both through her clinical experience and formal training.
The American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ABOG) now recognizes physicians’ additional expertise in Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery with its new Focused Practice Designation in Minimally Invasive Gynecologic Surgery (MIGS). The American Board of Medical Specialties (ABMS) approved this program within the specialty of Obstetrics and Gynecology.
This designation recognizes physicians who have additional surgical expertise and dedicate a significant percentage of their practice to the care of women with benign and complex gynecologic diseases and manage complications using minimally invasive surgical techniques. Experienced MIGS surgeons who meet ABOG’s stringent requirements are given the opportunity to take an examination that would designate them as experts in complex MIGS procedures.
Why choose a MIGS expert?
Minimally invasive gynecologic surgery is associated with significantly less blood loss during surgery, less scarring, less postoperative pain, and faster recovery than traditional open surgery. MIGS is a highly specialized skill which leads to better outcomes for patients.
Patients want to be sure their surgeon is experienced and equipped to handle complex surgical situations without succumbing to a large, open abdominal incision and a prolonged recovery.
Dr. Rebeles chose to pursue fellowship training in MIGS because the bulk of her Ob/Gyn residency training program was spent learning Obstetrics. This is true of most Ob/Gyn residency programs, often with only the last year of residency dedicated primarily to gynecologic surgery. Fellowship training gave her the opportunity to perform hundreds of minimally invasive surgeries including laparoscopic and robotic surgery. Dr. Rebeles has since then dedicated the past 10 years of her career practicing Gynecology only and successfully performing hundreds of minimally invasive gynecologic surgeries annually.
The Focused Practice Designation in MIGS requires the following:
- Minimum of three years of clinical practice with a focus in MIGS
- Current, active ABOG certification in Obstetrics and Gynecology to be eligible to apply and to sit for the MIGS examination
- Submission of a 12-month case log documenting a practice that demonstrates sufficient depth and breadth of focused practice in MIGS. The case log must have a minimum of 100 total minimally invasive gynecologic procedures in more than one category and must meet the minimum number of cases for those categories.
